1. The theme for NF 29 is Butterfly Blocks.

appliquéd, machine or hand pieced or paper pieced butterflies.  No machine embroidered butterflies will be
allowed but you can use embroidery to embellish your butterfly or block. The butterflies can be placed either
on point or straight.  And if you do them straight keep in mind our blocks will be more interesting if they are
not centered and straight up and down but off a little like they are flying on the block. Once you are a member
of our NF 29 yahoo group then you can veiw a photo of a butterfly quilt with blocks done both on point and
straight:

Helpful Hint: If you are appliquéing your block then you may want to cut a 7 inch block and
then trim it down to 6 1/2" after you are finished
appliquéing. We are encouraging original butterfly patterns so please feel free to design your own butterfly
pattern but it is not required.

3. Each participant will be representing three states. They will make a 17 blocks plus 2 sample blocks for
each of the states being represented. One sample block can be made from any designer fabrics and one
sample block must be made out of the fabric in the kit and the batik that you will be using for the rest of your
blocks. This way you can start on your first sample blocks before the fabric kits arrive.
So it is a total of 56 blocks (17 blocks for each state) We are including blocks for Washington DC and a
general USA block.  One sample block will be used for a quilt for charity for Breast Cancer Awareness and
the other sample block will be used for the Nifty Fifty Archives.

4. I will require two sample blocks by----Date still to be determined. Be sure you get your sample block
approved
before you cut and sew all 50+ blocks. If you are late with your sample block you will be dropped from the
exchange unless you have prior approval by me.

5. We will be using a cream designer fabric for the background of the butterflies. A Fabric Oasis http://www.
afabricoasis.com will be preparing fabric kits for our exchange. Everyone MUST order their fabric kits from
A Fabric Oasis. This will guarantee that the dye lots will match and everyone’s quilts will have the correct
background fabric. If you are dropped from the swap or decide to drop out of the swap then you MUST be
willing to sell our new quilter your purchased fabric.  All fabric must be pre-washed at least twice if not more
so the Batiks will not run into the background fabric. The butterflies must be made with designer batik fabric
which must be bright and bold. Please no muted colors unless they are in a very small amount on the butterflies
wings and they are needed to bring out the brighter colors.  Black and white will be allowed for the butterflies
trim, body and antennas. Please keep the white in the body of the butterfly instead of the trim of the butterfly
because of the cream background fabric.

6. We will not be signing our names and states on these blocks but instead everyone will be making a 2.5” x
2.5” signature block to be attached to each block by a safety pin. Please use one of your batiks that has been
used in your butterfly block to make your signature blocks. If your batik is too dark to sign then you can use
the cream background fabric or a lighter batik for your signature blocks. The signature blocks will need to be
signed with your name and state. You are welcome to be creative on these signature blocks and add to them if
you would like. If you are not representing your home state then be sure to sign the state your representing
and do not sign both states.

7. All blocks must follow our
Nifty Fifty Quality and Sewing Tips

8. Any quilter may adopt a state. Only one set of three
states per quilter until they get all their blocks
turned in to the hostess. A quilter can take on
another set of states if they are finished with their
first set.
